The Essay Writing Competition is based on the topic – Social Unity Against Extremist Ideology.  The competition is open to Higher Learners from Tertiary Institutions in Singapore.

The purpose of this educational initiative is to capture the perspective of youths from all backgrounds on the issue of Extremist Ideology. This will indeed be a useful resource that can be shared with the public that will heighten awareness and understanding of the issue.   It will further contribute in clearing up sentiments, skepticism and most importantly, to educate the community on the threat of radicalization.

It is hoped that with this competition, the written works gathered will emphasize the fundamental of preserving the harmony in our country and how to educate the public on the importance of social unity in combating extremist ideology where everyone regardless of race and religion must be proactive in facing this real threat from entering our shores.

TAMAN  BACAAN  will  produce  a  Journal  Publication  in  collaboration  with  SIM, Student Life Division where the essays submitted for the competition will be compiled based on merit and published.

The proposed essay length for the competition should be of 1,500 to 2,000 words.

Closing  date  for  submission  of  essay  is  28  February  2015.  The  results  of  the competition will be announced on 9 March 2015.

A panel of judges will be selected from various Tertiary Institutions to assist us in evaluating the essays submitted.

There will be four top prizes of $500, $300, $200 and four (4) $100 vouchers to be won for the best essay submitted.

TAMAN BACAAN will also arrange and select thirty (30) participants who participate in the Essay Writing Competition to visit the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Police Heritage Centre and also the Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG) Resource Centre at Khadijah Mosque as part of our continued effort to get the Higher Learners and future graduates to have a comprehensive knowledge on countering radicalization.

During this visit to the RRG Resource Centre, the participants will be able to have a dialogue with RRG and the Aftercare Group (ACG) leaders and who will share their experiences in playing the important role in combating extremist ideology in Singapore and also the rehabilitation and social re-integration of ex-detainees and their families.

Both hardcopy and softcopy of essays are to be submitted.
