Deanery Connect Session Feedback: 3 Oct 2011
At the recent Deanery Connect Session held on 3 Oct 2011, chaired by Assoc Prof Ong Chang Woei, students who participated in the open dialogue provided valuable insights and feedback into how FASS could ‘enhance student life’.
It is in this spirit that the notes of the session will be posted here for students’ viewing. Hopefully, other students who have yet to participate in such sessions would see the benefits of doing so, and come forward to share their views.
We look forward to having the continued support of FASS students at the upcoming Deanery Connect Sessions in the new semester.

FASS Students Benefit From Exam Preparation Talk
A ‘FASSForward to Exam’ preparatory talk by Faculty members was held on 17 Oct 2011 at AS7 Seminar Rooms A/B/C, 2-4pm. Organised by the External Relations and Student Life Division, in collaboration with faculty members from different departments, the event attracted more than 70 student participants.
Assoc Prof Bruce Lockhart (History), Assoc Prof Eddie Tong (Psychology) and Dr Ingrid Hoofd (CNM) shared insightful exam preparation strategies and relevant personal experiences, while Associate Professor T.C. Chang facilitated the talk as chair. Among the issues discussed were study and revision strategies, how to ace essay writing under examination conditions, and even stress relieving tips.
Participants were treated to a sumptuous buffet tea after the talk which also provided a splendid opportunity for them to mingle and make new friends.
Assoc Prof T.C. Chang felt that the talk was very helpful for students and could be organised again in the next semester. He said, “It was a great session, and I’m sure our students went away with some good ideas and suggestions.”
The recorded talk is uploaded here for students to view, together with a handout of one-liners from different faculty members on revision tips and exam strategies. Some of the tips include the importance of keeping up with current affairs, having sufficient sleep and forming study groups.
Extending Deanery Connect Series to FASS Postgraduate Students
In a bid to bring senior management a step closer to more students, the External Relations and Student Life Division organised the inaugural Deanery Connect Session for FASS postgraduate research students on 19 Oct 2011 at AS7.
Chaired by Associate Professor Shirlena Huang, Vice-Dean (Graduate Studies), the session proved to be a good platform for postgraduate students to discuss their concerns and provide valuable feedback.
In general, the participants found the session useful. One student said, “It was very fruitful and it gave the students an avenue to voice out their concerns and experiences. It was also a good way to exchange ideas and stories about graduate life.”
The Deanery Connect Series kick started in 2009 and was initially open to FASS undergraduate students. A total of about 18 sessions have since been organised.
