In New Textbook, the Story of Singapore Begins 500 Years Earlier

It was reported that Associate Professor John Miksic from the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences had advised the government on a new history text for secondary schools titled “Singapore: The Making of a Nation-State, 1300-1975”, which was introduced in January. The new story brings into focus a 300-year period, from 1300 to 1600, when Singapore was a thriving multinational trading hub, with an estimated population of 10,000.
