This was a report on the National Environment Agency’s tray return initiative at food outlets to help Singaporeans inculcate the practice of clearing their own dishes after their meals. Professor Lily Kong from the Department of Geography at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, who is also NUS Vice Provost (Academic Personnel), commented that Singaporeans are already used to having someone clear their dishes for them, including at home. Prof Kong, who had authored ‘Singapore Hawker Centres’, suggested that to encourage diners to return trays, more tray return facilities could be installed at food outlets but people’s attitudes is still key to the initiative.
