It was reported that the Malay Heritage Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Malay Studies at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, had organised the seminar titled “Literature for Independence” as part of the Al-Bustan Seminar Series, which explored the relations between independence and literature. The seminar featured guest speaker Mr Mohamed Latif Mohamed, a prolific poet and writer in Singapore’s Malay literary scene. It was noted that his works can be recognised as classic works and that they reflect the nationalistic sentiment that was the reality of that time.
Singapore history to be explored in play at NUS Arts Festival

It was reported that a group of Year 3 students from the Theatre Studies Programme at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will be staging the play “Furthest North, Deepest South”, on 21 and 22 March 2015 at the NUS Arts Festival. The play explores the adventures of Cheng Ho, the eunuch admiral who many claim to have circumnavigated the planet long before Magellan. The play is directed by Mr Felipe Cervera, who is a PhD candidate at the NUS Theatre Studies Programme.
Emirates holds hackathon in Singapore

It was reported that Emirates is partnering Web In Travel (WIT) to run its first 48-hour long hackathon in Singapore, which is held in collaboration with Keio-NUS CUTE Center and the Department of Communications and New Media at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The hackathon is a coding marathon that brings together developers and designers from the Asia Pacific region and invites ‘hackers’ to build unique web or mobile apps that enhances customer experience by using web and mobile application programming interface.

This was a report on the “Singapore at 50: Reflections and Visions” Symposium jointly organised by the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ Singapore Research Nexus, Social and Policy Research Cluster and the Department of Political Science on 10 March 2015. The speakers included Ms Chia Yong Yong, President of SPD and Nominated Member of Parliament; Mr Dominic Tan, Head of WeCare@MarineParade; and Ms Sumytra Menon, Senior Assistant Director of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. They reflected on Singapore over the past 50 years and what can be expected in the next 50. The symposium was attended by about 60 students, researchers and representatives from the public and non-profit organisations.

STARS Awards and Lohei Dinner 2015
Alongside the myriad of awards honouring members of the Faculty, the FASS STARS Awards and Lohei Dinner (2015) also saw the inauguration of the Distinguished Arts and Social Sciences Alumni Award. Befitting NUS’ 110th and Singapore’s 50th year respectively, the inaugural recipients comprise eight outstanding alumni from FASS whose illustrious achievements and careers have shaped the landscape of the Faculty, University, Singapore and beyond.

The Distinguished Arts and Social Sciences Alumni Award (Lifetime Achievement) was conferred upon former President Mr S R Nathan (Class ‘54) for his outstanding contributions. Seven other exceptional alumni were also recognised. They are:
- Professor Maurice Baker (Class of ’41)
- Professor Wang Gungwu (Class of ’53, ’56)
- Mr Herman Ronald Hochstadt (Class of ’58)
- Mrs Tan Suan Imm (Class of ’61)
- Ambassador Chan Heng Chee (Class of ’64, ’74)
- Mr Yap Boh Tiong (Class of ’69, ’73)
- Professor Kishore Mahbubani (Class of ’71)
Additionally, 124 FASS STARS (Service, Teaching, Alumni, Research and Long Service) Awards were presented to faculty and staff to celebrate their remarkable achievements and years of dedication. The Faculty Research Award recognises excellent staff achievements and encourages quality research; the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award is given to faculty members who have displayed a high level of commitment to their teaching; the FASS Service Award honours administrative staff for their excellent service attitude; and the Long Service Award commemorates the long-term commitment and loyalty of employees who have achieved significant milestones with the Faculty.

The 2015 STARS Awards coincided with the Faculty’s Lunar New Year Lohei celebrations and the entertainment provided for the evening augured well with it. A roving silhouette artist, Mr Welles Tan, expertly cut out guests’ side profiles within seconds. FASS’ alumni Jonathan Leong (Class of ’07) belted out Maybe Tonight (whose melody and lyrics he wrote) and the popular Mandarin song Xin Bu Liao Qing.

The highlight of the performances was certainly by mask-changer Li Quanlin. Mr Li piqued the interest of the crowd with his entrance and costume, later on indulging them with a teasing performance; he changed his “face” without touching it!

All in all, it was a very enjoyable night with good food and great company. Congratulations to all our STARS winners!

Annual Teaching Excellence Award 2014 and FASS Special Teaching Award Winners
We are very pleased to extend our warmest congratulations to the following faculty members on their achievements. A total of 6 faculty members have won the Annual Teaching Excellence Award 2014 (for teaching done in 2013/14). Of these, two have further distinguished themselves by being placed on the ATEA Honour Roll for having won the ATEA a total of three times. In addition to the ATEA 2014 winners, the Faculty also recognises six faculty members who have won the ‘FASS Special Teaching Awards’ at the recently concluded FASS awards ceremony/dinner. The winners are:
- A/P Timothy Barnard (History) who wins the Educational Leadership Award which acknowledges colleagues who have made a difference in curricula and programme development.
- Ms Sasiwimol Klayklueng (Centre for Language Studies) who wins the Pedagogy Award which acknowledges colleagues with excellent research on teaching and learning pedagogies.
- A/P Lim Sun Sun (Communications and New Media) who wins the Innovation Award which recognises innovative use of technologies in teaching and engaging students.
- Dr Suriani Suratman (Malay Studies) who wins the Versatility Award, which recognises colleagues who teach an admirable range of modules across levels, student numbers and genres.
- Dr Zhang Yang (Economics) and Dr Gilbert Yeoh (English Language and Literature) who both win the Students’ Choice Award which recognises excellence in student feedback (both qualitative and quantitative).
