WEF: Innovations crucial for world’s future

Assoc Prof Ho Kong Chong, Vice Dean of Research, FASS, was part of the team from NUS who attended the  Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2013. Otherwise known as the Summer Davos of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the event held at Dalian, China from 11 to 13 September this year focused on “Meeting the Innovation Imperative”.  The NUS team was there to showcase their ideas on urban design innovations at the meeting’s IdeasLab. They presented new thinking on four aspects of making high-density cities liveable: enabling innovations that make cities do more with less and provide something for everyone; exploiting better community design for resource optimisation and recovery; using technology for enhancing urban preservation efforts; and creating space for civic dialogue to bridge cultural differences. IdeasLab is an open platform where leading thinkers from the world’s top academic institutions present their current thinking, and the audience and their colleagues interact on their ideas.

The Kent Ridge Common – CALL FOR WRITERS!

The Kent Ridge Common (KRC) is an independent online newspaper staffed by NUS undergraduates and alumni. Over the three years since it was established, undergraduates have written on a plethora of topics ranging from arts & culture, literary/drama reviews, political, social and economic issues in Singapore today through over 800 news articles, commentaries and analysis.

KRC articles have been cited by The New York Times and Lianhe Zaobao. During the General Elections in 2011, monthly readership closed at a high of approximately half a million readers. This August, KRC has been mentioned in a The Straits Times report as preferring “views backed by strong evidence”. In its UpFront section, KRC has interviewed the likes of local novelist Catherine Lim, movie director Glen Goei, and MP Sylvia Lim.

The Kent Ridge Common is and will always be established upon the vibrancy, thoughts and viewpoints of NUS students. This is thus a call for interested writers who are looking to add some adventure to their time in NUS to join the publication as a writer.

Commencement 2013 Celebrations

This year, a good number of the departments in FASS, together with some of their alumni associations, organised events to celebrate their graduates’ commencement. Lunches, dinners, and even themed parties were held. Some of the highlights include: personalised congratulatory letters with calligraphy (Department of Chinese Studies), performances put up by the NUS Rondalla and the Chorda Trio (Department of Economics), instant photo booth with fanciful props (Department of Political Science), and students and staff coming with ‘mad hats’ of their own (Department of History).
