About Himself: How can the stories we tell about ourselves motivate us to act? Why should they? It seems that some of our self-accounts have a narrative structure, and these accounts seem to have some motivating force – giving us reasons and compelling us to act in one way rather than another. In my thesis, I seek to suggest just why we might be drawn to narrative accounts for our ethical selves and explore just how such an account might work.
My thesis fits into my broader philosophical interests in ethics, aesthetics, theories of identity, and traditions of value. I also have an interest in Greek thought, specifically with respects to the writings of Aristotle and Plato.
