The NUS Dance Ensemble is proud to present The Next Wave 2009. Performing on 18 and 19 September, we highlight people and issues in our lives that tend to be overlooked. We bring you on a journey from a deceptively innocent portrayal of teenage courtship, to the gloomy reality of prison life, to the declining value of “face” in Asian society. The performance features new works by Guest Choreographer Dan Kwoh; alumni members Shahbirul Zaki Ahmad, Julihanna Annuar, Nazri Ishak, Syed Hamzah, Huang Zheng, and Chen Jiexiao; as well as our Resident Choreographer, Zaini Mohammad Tahir.
Since its inception in 1992, the NUS Dance Ensemble has matured into one of NUS’ most established dance groups. We now boast some 150 undergraduate and alumni members. Under the direction of Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Zaini Mohammad Tahir, we have developed an extensive repertoire, performing both locally and internationally. We explore genres such as Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Asian Traditional, thus defying simple categorization of our performances. As a recipient of the Best Choreography Award and Special Personal Award of the Director among over 400 groups worldwide at the New Prague Dance Festival held in July, the NUS Dance Ensemble continues to soar to bigger dreams and greater heights.
