Midterm Madness and How to Cope

Recess week will end in a couple of days and the dreaded week 7 (also known as midterms week) is upon us. If you have been diligent and hardworking throughout the term and the break, you are probably ready to tackle midterms head-on. For the rest of us, however, week 7 might just be our most tedious ordeal in the month of February.

But fret not, the NUS Res Life team has some tips to get you through your midterms! And if you do not have any midterms (congratulations!), we hope that these tips will help you through group projects and your other CAs as well.

  1. Accept the situation; do not panic

It is okay, we all procrastinate. We get ourselves into situations we do not want to be in. When you realise that you’re knee-deep in midterm stress, do not panic – panicking will only worsen the situation. Instead, accept it and move on. It’s time to get to work!

  1. Make a list of things you need to do and then do them

Life is just messier when everything is up in your head. Grab a piece of paper and start writing down the things that you NEED to do and their respective deadlines. After that, you can easily prioritize the things that need to be done first, and not be bogged down by less urgent matters.

  1. Do not give up

Everything may seem bleak at this point but don’t give up. Let any negative energy go and just focus on the things you need to do right now. Try to also think of things to look forward to after this ordeal is over. You will only regret it later if you give up now.

  1. Have enough sleep before your test

Last minute studying for midterms may demand pulling all-nighters. While we agree that it is necessary in dire situations, we suggest getting in at least one sleep cycle (1.5 hours of sleep) before your test. Your brain needs rest to work and be effective. Remember to eat and hydrate yourself before the test too!

  1. Do not repeat for finals

When you are done with midterms, recount the madness and make a mental note to never do that again. Or at least learn how to better manage studying last minute – start drawing up a timeline for yourself so that this vicious cycle doesn’t repeat itself!

We hope that these tips were helpful and that you are better prepared to face week 7. Good luck for your midterms!
