Recess Week: Expectations VS Reality

Recess week is almost here! After six whole weeks of school, the arrival of this glorious midterm break is exciting business. However, we are all aware of the unfortunate dichotomy between the expectations and reality of recess week…

Expectations: I finally have time to go out and chill!

This is wholly possible! We recommend (1) swimming at the UTown pool, (2) doing the Southern Ridges hiking trail, (3) café-hopping at Holland Village, for some nearby fun.

Reality: Spending the day doing nothing.

We acknowledge that staying in and taking time out for yourself is good for your body, mind, and spirit! But we urge you to be productive too!

Expectations: I finally have time to get my life together and do work!

Pro tip: set small and realistic goals for yourself at the start of recess week and get that satisfaction when you cross items off your to-do list! You’ll definitely be much more motivated this way.

Reality: Does nothing the whole week and rushes assignments at the very last minute.

While we advise against this, do know if you are really overwhelmed by work, you can always email your prof and ask for an extension!

Expectations: I finally have time to meet up with my friends!

It is so easy to be consumed by all your work and responsibilities during the semester, but try to take the time and have a meal with your friends. We promise that they’ll appreciate your initiative and love!

Reality: Spending recess week meeting group mates for project work.

Admittedly, this is necessary… But hopefully, through all these projects, you’ll form new friendships too! You can also have a meal with your group mates when all the work is done. We at Residential Life sincerely believe that food bonds people together.

Expectations: Being able to take a short trip overseas with friends/family.

How cool would it be to spend the entire recess week traveling! However, we understand that not everyone has the time and money to do that. Instead, we recommend a day trip to Johor Bahru. You can take a public bus to get there, or even a 5-minute train via the KTM Railway, and fill your tummies with cheap and good food!

Reality: Staying in Singapore.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with staying in Singapore during recess week! Our buzzing city is brimming with fun activities for you to do. Try browsing Weekender Singapore for fun things to do every week!

The possibilities for recess week are endless! However you choose to spend your time, we hope that you’ll have a wonderful recess week. Good luck!
