The issue of sustainability and environment from a different perspective, namely, the manufacturers and engineering perspective rather than the consumers’ perspective is equally critical, as consumers can only have as much choices, whether it is a WEEE product or otherwise, as the manufacturers and engineers can provide them with.

Our lab has been conducting research into the environmental impact and life cycle assessment of products and processes, and the remanufacturing of products. Remanufacturing is an end-of-life strategy that can achieve perpetual material flows in a product life-cycle and thus achieving circular economy.

Since 2007, our lab conducts a masters level module ME5611 on Sustainable Product Design and Manufacturing where students have to look into an existing product, disassemble the product to analyze the design, manufacturing, logistic, and end-of-life strategies of this product, and propose design and manufacturing improvements to reduce the carbon footprint of this product in all life cycle stages of this product.
