Antibiotic use in the animal sector in Singapore

This study aims to understand the patterns and determinants of antimicrobial use in Singapore’s animal sector.

Singapore launched its national strategic action plan to address AMR in November 2017 which includes as a specific priority to reduce inappropriate use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. However, little is known about patterns and determinants of antimicrobial use in Singapore’s animal sector. In this study, we conducted a qualitative study of Singaporean food fish farmers and small animal veterinarians to better understand their knowledge of antibiotic use and resistance, perceptions of infection prevention and control measures, as well as feasibility of planned interventions.  Understanding this will allow greater insight into antibiotic use in Singapore’s animal sector and a basis from which further research work on interventions on both farmers and veterinarians can be undertaken.
