Art and About

The arts scene in Singapore has burgeoned over the last few years – visiting the museum, watching plays, and going for concerts has quickly become a popular past time for many of us. This week, the NUS Res Life team has compiled some of our favourite arts and cultural activities, and we hope that this list will help you spice up your summer break!

#1 Gillman Barracks

Gillman Barracks is a contemporary arts cluster in Singapore. There are plenty of art galleries – a pleasant feast for your eyes! When you’re done with exploring the area, you can always grab a bite at one of many eateries there (e.g. Creamier, Timbre @ Gillman, Handlebar).

#2 Singapore Art Museum (SAM)

In conjunction with the June holidays, SAM has lined up a bunch of different activities you can do this summer (e.g. watching short films, creating a dream mobile). If you are in the mood to try something new, like contributing to an artist’s sculpture even, head down to SAM and join in the fun!

#3 Cafés and art

Singaporeans all love food (or almost all of us anyway!) so combining food and art makes art appealing to everyone! Head down to cafés like Artistry and SPRMRKT with your non-artsy friends, appreciate art exhibits over good food, and perhaps change their minds about the arts scene in Singapore. Or create some art yourself at cafés like Arteasetiq!

#4 Watch a play

Watching a live performance always provides a more visceral experience than a movie or a television show. Why not try catching a play this summer? Pangdemonium, a Singaporean theatre company, is now commissioning a local play titled This play about love, acceptance, compassion, tradition, and the complexities of family relationships will definitely be a night of heart-wrenching goodness.

#5 Singapore ArtScience Museum

The Singapore ArtScience Museum has recently launched a new exhibit – What does it mean to be human in a world of fast-evolving technology, which could produce cyborgs, clones or superhumans? Find out at this exhibit. For all our camera-trigger-happy readers, this exhibit is also touted be very Instagrammable, so remember to bring your phones and a friend (to help you take the shots, of course)! Take this opportunity to also visit ongoing exhibitions like FUTURE WORLD: Where Art Meets Science, where installations have appeared in a multitude of glittery Instagram shots over the past year. Check them all out on the Instagram location tag !
