Apparently, it’s not only when you’re having fun that time flies.

If you are looking for ways to end this week with some new events and activities to make it the most memorable recess week ever, read on, because we’ve got some recommendations of what you should be doing to end the recess week with a big bang.

  1. Israel Film Festival

Presented by the Embassy of Israel Singapore, the Israel Film Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the month. This year, the event celebrates its 24th run, and is back with five highly appraised films that beautifully depict not only the Israeli culture, but also several crucial social issues we should all be giving some thought to.

The Israel Film Festival happens from the 22nd to 25th of September, at The Projector, 6601 Beach Road, Singapore. Tickets are going at $13 for each screening ($11 for concession tickets). Find out more about the event at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1614421935555192/

  1. Revise your module plans.

This may be the least exciting tip of all, but on an academic note, for busy residents (especially freshmen and exchange students) out there who are going through their first recess week, here’s a quick reminder that the end of recess week is the deadline for dropping your modules with a W (withdrawn) grade. That’s 25 September for you, if you’re lazy to check your calendar. If you’ve been finding your overall workload slightly overwhelming, do consider revising your modules for this semester!

For more information on module dropping periods, please refer to the NUS official page at: http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/events/module-enrolment.html

  1. Hop Around Gillman Barracks… and everywhere that’s busy in the Singapore Arts Scene

With the autumn winds blowing (yes, Singapore is summer all-year-long but with the recent cool rain and winds, it feels as though autumn is here, doesn’t it?), this is the perfect time of the year to indulge yourself in the artistic vibe that is blooming in many of Singapore’s galleries and museums. September is indeed an artistic month for Singapore!

First up, one of Singapore’s hottest and most-visited art spots, Gillman Barracks, is hosting another round of ‘Art After Dark’ and ‘Art Day Out!’ this year. Celebrating the art cluster’s fourth anniversary, Gillman Barracks will be filled with opportunities this weekend to appreciate, discuss, and interact with pieces of art and their creators. ‘Art After Dark’ is on 23 September, from 7 to 11pm, and ‘Art Day Out!’ is the day after, on 24 September, 2 to 7pm. Find out more about this artsy celebration at: https://www.gillmanbarracks.com/others/gillman-barracks/1168

Were you a child who would be fascinated by paradoxical drawings and mind-boggling patterns? Relive that childhood memory at the Escher’s World of Wonder exhibit at the ArtScience Museum, where you can appreciate over 150 original works of Escher, a renowned graphic artist well-known for his tessellations, geometric artworks, and paradoxical paintings. Open 10am to 7pm, starting from 24th September. Tickets are $17, while students can enjoy a price of $14 with a valid student ID. Find out more about the exhibition here: https://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/mcescher.html#QUpIcIcQkl4gterR.97

For our residents majoring in Architecture or those who are simply interested in Singapore’s urban planning, Archifest 2016 is the place to be this weekend. From exhibitions at the Raffles Place Park to Architours (which is, by the way, co-hosted by NUS), Archifest 2016 will broaden your view of Singapore’s rich urban landscape. From 23 September to 9 October. More information can be found at: http://archifest.sg/2016/#Archifest

Collective Designs Fair is also a great event where you can support small businesses and indie designers with great talent, creative ideas, and most importantly, beautiful products. Visit the fair this Friday and Saturday (23rd and 24th of September) happening in Spaces at 410 North Bridge Road, level 6. Like their page at: https://www.facebook.com/CollectiveDesignsFair and follow their Instagram @collectivedesignsfair for more updates!

Too much art, but too little music? For the music-lovers out there (especially the rockers), LAMC Productions has invited yet another big star to Singapore: Bring Me the Horizon, a 12-year-old British rock band with great tracks, is coming to Singapore for a concert at the Fort Canning Park. Their gig is a couple of days after recess week, on the 27 September (8pm) though, so you might want to spend some extra time studying during recess week if you are eager to be there at the concert! Tickets are at $108.

  1. Gather your neighbours for a fun games session

Although September – especially recess week, by some coincidence – seems to be filled with exciting events, we admit there are times when even your all-time favourite celebrity is not enough of a motivation to pull you out of bed. For the couch potatoes, we’ve got your back: why not gather your neighbours down for supper, a little chit-chat, and fun games?

Need some game recommendations? For residents who are hankering after a local game, you can always learn Mahjong, an addictive Chinese game usually played during Chinese New Year that is surprisingly easy to learn despite all the Chinese characters and patterns. Can’t find a playable Mahjong table around you? In that case, we also suggest party games by Jackbox Games – you can simply link your friends up on their phones and play hilarious games (the more silly friends you have in your group, the better!). Also, if you are living at an RC, hall or residence that has a board game lending system, you can simply check the board games out for you and your friends to play.

More smartphone games you can play in your suite’s living room or the common areas can be found here: https://www.inverse.com/article/9690-the-7-best-smartphone-games-for-groups

We hope you found these recommendations useful! Keep an eye on our Facebook page and blog for more useful content, and please leave comments below or on our Facebook post if you have any opinions or ideas. And last but not least, have fun during the last few days of recess! 🙂
