FOUR THINGS YOU CAN (FINALLY) DO THIS SUMMER HOLIDAY

What time is it? Summer time! The long-awaited, well-deserved break is finally, finally here. We’ve done it. Projects after projects. Exams after exams. We can finally breathe the air of freedom. So, what now? Yes, paying your sleep debt and going out for nice meals are probably on top of your list. But the summer break is a three-month holiday. Unless you plan on being a couch potato for the whole three months and gain five kilograms by the end of it (or unless you’ve gotten an internship which will keep you busy), you might be looking for stuff to do to spend your holiday. Look no further because we have listed four things that you can consider for the summer!

  1. Pick up new skills/hobbies

Yoda_memeThree months is a very long time when you think about it. It’s a quarter of a year. It’s got twelve weeks in it. If we could learn the content of our modules in six weeks before going for midterms, imagine what we can learn in twice as long amount of time. You’ve probably said “I want to do this after exams”, “I want to learn that after finals” and so on. Well, now’s the time to pick up those new skills and hobbies! We are so blessed to live in this digital age – learning new skills has never been easier. With abundance of information and YouTube tutorials available online, you don’t even have to travel or spend money to acquire these skills. Check out this list of free online courses which can help you learn invaluable skills: https://www.buzzfeed.com/summeranne/24-invaluable-skills-to-learn-for-free-online-this-year?utm_term=.jdp6Qzr4GG#.yj40vwxqll

  1. Short getaway
Singapore's Coney Island

If you’re going far away from the country for the holiday, you’ve probably had things planned out way beforehand (cheaper plane tickets and all). But if you don’t have anything planned yet, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to stay in the country for the whole holiday! You can always take a short trip to a nearby island or country for a quick, relatively cheap, getaway. Of course it all depends on what you want to do on your trip. For those want to find better places overseas to stargaze, this list might be helpful: http://www.tripzilla.com/places-near-singapore-stargazing/21406. But if you’re looking for cheap shopping places, you may want to go to Bangkok or nearer still, Johor Bahru. Even inside Singapore, you can also explore the smaller, less crowded islands such as Coney Island and Pulau Ubin (this comprehensive list pretty much sums them up for us: http://thesmartlocal.com/read/singapore-islands)

  1. Local festivities

great-singapore-saleOtherwise, if you decide to stay in Singapore, make full use of our own events and festivals! One particular event that tourists are looking forward to invade the country for is definitely the Great Singapore Sale, which will be going on from 3 June to 14 August this year. You may have to “fight” against the tourists, but some deals are just oh so worth it. Another event coming up is Singapore Food Expo 2016. Yup, you read that right – food! It’s happening 27-31 May at Singapore Expo Hall, and admission is free. Can’t get enough of food? There’s another event before that, called Savour, which in an annual food festival in Singapore. Savour Gourmet will be on from 12 – 15 May. Visit their website for more info: http://www.savour.sg/

  1. Read those books

During school period, the only things you read were probably your textbooks, lecture notes and whatnots. The time has finally come for you to be able to read for leisure in peace, without any lingering guilt that you should be doing something else. Read those novels, magazines, or even comic books you’ve always wanted to read, now that you have the time. A recommended place for reading is Real Food, which has outlets at Novena Square 2, Killiney Road and the Central. Not only does it have healthy (organic, vegan and/or vegetarian) food and a great ambiance, it also has shelves of a variety of books you can read while waiting for or enjoying your order.

We hope this post can help you make better use of your summer holiday! Remember that it’s a good time to catch up with your friends and family too, before everyone gets busy again! 🙂
