Environmental Causes of Slips, Trips, and Falls: Creating a Safe Campus Environment

Slips, trips, and falls (STFs) can occur due to various environmental factors that pose hazards within our campus. At NUS, we are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, and visitors. This webpage focuses on raising awareness about the environmental causes of STFs and the proactive measures we take to mitigate these risks.

1. Uneven Surfaces and Flooring:

Uneven surfaces and flooring pose a significant risk for tripping incidents. Cracked sidewalks, damaged pavements, or uneven floor transitions can catch individuals off guard, leading to loss of balance and falls. To address this environmental cause, we prioritize regular maintenance and repair works across campus. By promptly identifying and rectifying uneven surfaces, we aim to create a more level and secure walking environment.

2. Wet and Slippery Surfaces:

Wet or slippery surfaces, such as recently cleaned floors or rainy pathways, can significantly increase the risk of slips and falls. We understand that unpredictable weather conditions and unforeseen spills can create hazards. To mitigate these risks, we have implemented measures such as strategically placing warning signs, using non-slip mats, and promptly addressing spills or wet areas. Additionally, we encourage individuals to take caution, walk slowly, and use designated walkways during inclement weather.

3. Obstructed Pathways and Clutter:

Obstacles and clutter in walkways or corridors can impede safe movement and increase the risk of tripping. We strive to maintain clear and unobstructed pathways by regularly monitoring high-traffic areas and promptly addressing any clutter or obstructions. We encourage the entire NUS community to be vigilant and report any instances of blocked or obstructed pathways to our facilities management team.
