Make The Most Out of NUS Student Life: Things to Do On Campus

The start of a new semester… and already week 3? Be it your first year here or your last, there are always a ton of new activities to participate in. Don’t let your NUS journey be filled with just memories of hitting the books – revel in having a vibrant student life too! Here are four fun and free things that you can do on campus.

 1. Utilise the Free Facilities in NUS

While it isn’t a big secret, making full use of the facilities on campus is often overlooked. Round up your residential neighbours and get in a badminton session at the University Sports Centre (USC) or hit up the gym at NUS UTown.

Only NUS staff/students are eligible to book for the badminton courts, squash courts, table tennis tables and tennis courts.

USC offers a range of sporting facilities inclusive of squash courts, table tennis tables and tennis courts. If you’re feeling adventurous and would like to try your hand at something a little more out of the ordinary, there are also Bouldering Walls in both U-Town and USC.

Bookings can be made through the NUS Facilities Booking page where students will need to register in REBOKS to activate their free access to the Swimming Pools and Fitness Gyms.

2. Sign up for Workshops

If you haven’t already, join NUSSU’s and NUS’s Main Telegram group! There, you can get notifications on a wide range of workshops and activities that are going on in campus. These activities range from skillset workshops like Excel or Adobe Illustrator, to one-time events like Movie Night at Yusof Ishak House (YIH).

NUS Pit Stop at level 1 of YIH also holds such similar workshops aimed at improving student welfare – check out our very own article feature with a Peer Student Supporter (PSS) for more information.

 3. Join Interest Clubs

Joining student Interest Clubs are a good way to get involved in the many communities around campus. Being more of a long-term commitment, it’s also a great way to forge greater bonds with other like-minded peers.

Scroll through the Students Organizations Directory and take your pick on the organisations to join.

These interest clubs typically also have open sessions that are available to all NUS students that occur time to time throughout the year – so you can look out for those too if you want to try out their classes beforehand, no strings attached!

 4. Find Work/Research Opportunities

If you are looking to gain new work experiences and hone your skill sets, the NUS Student Work Scheme (NSWS) is the platform for you. Students can source for work-study assignments that interest them and gain working experience before they graduate.

The details of available jobs are posted in the NSWS Central Resource Portal where NUS departments advertise for student helpers/interns/part-time positions. Jobs posted can be filtered under the various departments so you can narrow down your options and figure out what interests you most.

Additionally, you can also get your resume vetted by the NUS Career Advisors or schedule an appointment to help in your preparation for job interviews.

With a myriad of clubs and initiatives to join, you will definitely find something that will appeal to you. So do keep your eyes peeled and follow the necessary NUS accounts for more updates.
