Hi there! Welcome to my e-portfolio!

I’m Jacky, an English Language major and University Scholar in the National University of Singapore. This portfolio features the personal insights birthed from reflecting on four years of undergraduate work and showcases some of the papers I have written. I hope the reflections in this portfolio will provoke thought in you and perhaps draw your attention to some less obvious insight regarding how we learn, think or speak.

The theme of this e-portfolio is We Are Mental Architects. I’m not an Architecture student, but I consider myself no less an architect, albeit one of the mental world. The word architect is derived from two greek words – arkhi (chief) and tekton (builder); it literally means “chief builder”. As human beings, we learn, think and speak. When we do these things, what we really are doing is building worlds – both internal and external.

This posts in this portfolio explain how learning, thinking and speaking are really mental architecture.

The post We Learn By Making examines how we learn by building mental worlds in our minds. That post also argues that the most effective way of doing that is to engage in the building of actual, physical and visible objects.

The post We Think In Steps looks at how we think. It demonstrates how mental processes that we often assume are intuitive can actually be traced in discernible steps.

The post We Speak To Act argues that when we speak, we are actually actively shaping and designing the world that we live in.
