As a concluding blog post, I have decided to share about the future of air pollution and the major threats that mankind will continue to face in the coming years. Since it is a worldwide phenomenon, the problem of poor air quality concerns every individual on this planet and thus signals the need for humans to take immediate action on different scales – individual, national and international.

With the increasing recognition for cleaner air worldwide, various groups and governments have spearheaded campaigns to raise awareness about and take action to combat air pollution. One such example is the world’s first 24-hour Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in central London, United Kingdom. The ULEZ was launched in April 2019 as a measure to reduce air pollution and improve air quality in the highly dense and congested city.
Air pollution is a significant public health concern globally, with a wide range of harmful effects on human health. Schools, in particular, are vulnerable to air pollution due to their proximity to busy roads and the presence of many young children who are more susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution. Recently, a journal article titled “Investigation of air pollution mitigation measures, ventilation, and indoor air quality at three schools in London” was published in Atmospheric Environment, exploring various measures that can be taken to mitigate air pollution in schools and improve indoor air quality.
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and volcanic eruptions can have a significant impact on air pollution levels worldwide. The damage caused by these events can result in the release of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, leading to serious health and environmental consequences. Given the rise in extreme weather events, it has become pertinent to explore the two-way relationship between natural disasters and atmospheric air quality.

UHIs are defined as areas in urbanised regions where the temperature is significantly higher than in surrounding rural areas. The formation of secondary pollutants is a serious concern in urban environments, and the influence of UHIs on this process has been extensively studied. This blog post discusses how UHIs influence secondary pollutant formation and explores some of the implications of this phenomenon for human health and the environment.
Now that we understand carbon offsets a little better (if you don’t, check out my previous post!), this blog delves into the reasons why carbon offsets may not be entirely as green nor as effective as they sound. This blog thus explores the link between environmental (in)justice and environmental concerns pertaining to the rising levels of air pollution worldwide, which entails an urgent call to action.
