Simon Fraser University (SFU) is pleased to invite qualified students at your university to submit an application to the SFU-Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) program. The Mitacs GRA program provides $6000 to senior undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to conduct 12-24-week research projects at SFU. (Please note that this program is separate from the exchange program with your institution.) A few highlights of the program include:

 

  • Over 20 SFU research projects available in the Faculty of Applied Science, the Faculty of Arts &  Social Sciences, and Beedie School of Business.
  • CAD $6000 in funding

This year, the programme will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 10-14 June 2019. The host will cover the costs of accommodation, local transportation and meals for all participants. In addition, GRO will be providing some financial support. More details to come after signing up.

STEER Israel/Jordan – application ends 15 March 2019

Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Creating Sustainable Solutions for Marginalised Communities

 

What STEER Israel/Jordan is about?

 

Israel is a technopreneur hub with strong government and private sector support. This startup nation has more than 6,000 startups, 70+ VC funds, 200+ accelerators in 2017, in addition to 350 multinational research and development centres (Forbes, December 2018). Israel’s R & D expenditure as a percentage of GDP is the largest in the world and it also ranks highly in embracing disruptive technologies. Renowned for its innovation ecosystem that promotes collaborative creativity, Israel continues to inspire entrepreneurs all over the world.

 

Jordan has attracted interests with global entrepreneurs in its collaboration with the World Bank via its Innovative Startups Fund Project that is worth US50 million. Launched with the Central Bank of Jordan in 2017 (joint funding worth US$99 million), the fund encourages entrepreneurship from all over the country, focusing on helping the poor in remote regions and vulnerable groups such as women entrepreneurs. Jordan’s local innovation scene is defined by the National Centre for Innovation (NCI), implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The NCI spearheads innovation-led and inclusive productivity growth for the government and SMEs.

 

Learn how the two governments are working to diversify their economies, support public and private entrepreneurial activities and empowering youth and vulnerable population groups by taking part in our educational visits to governmental and private sector organisations, non-profits, academic institutions and start up accelerators in Israel and Jordan. Network with entrepreneurs and undergraduates from universities in both countries.

 

Soak in the intense historical and cultural vibrancy of Jerusalem’s Old City, admire the impressive architecture and indulge in the culinary delights of Tel Aviv. Participants will spend approximately 9 days in Israel followed by 5 days in Jordan.

 

Who can apply?

 

STEER Israel/Jordan is open to all full‐time NUS undergraduate students*.

 

Successful applicants should be thoughtful and mature in their outlook and be able to act as effective ambassadors of NUS.

 

Undergraduates who have not previously participated in any STEER programmes will be given priority in their applications.

 

*Graduating students may apply for the programme. But they will not be eligible for funding from Enterprise Singapore.

Visa fees (where applicable) and other personal expenses will be borne by the student.

 

Is financial assistance available?

 

The Global Relations Office (GRO) will provide a STEER Award, valued at S$500 per student to successful candidates to help offset the cost of the programme. Students who are Singapore citizens or Singapore PRs (except those in their graduating semester) may apply for funding from Enterprise Singapore for up to S$800.

 

After relevant subsidies, the estimated cost is between:

 

S$3,700 – S$3,900 for Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, who are eligible for Enterprise Singapore funding*

 

S$4,500 – S$4,700 for non-Singaporeans and non-Singapore PRs

 

Students from Yale-NUS College will need to approach the Yale-NUS College for financial assistance.

What is STEER?

The NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) is a programme designed to familiarise students with the diverse socio-cultural-economic environments of new and fast-evolving regions through a mix of classroom-based learning and experimental site visits. Inaugurated in December 2010, the STEER programme has expanded to include countries in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam), Asia (China, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan), Central America (Costa Rica, Panama), Latin America (Brazil), the Middle East (Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates), Eastern Europe (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia) and Southern Africa (Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe).

 

What does STEER (Iran and Oman) offer?

In Iran, grasp the complexities of its development after the Iranian revolution in 1979. See how sanctions led Iran to become a resistive economy relying on domestic capacities, developing barter trade and an import substitution model of industrialisation. Even as the majority of its revenue comes from the export of hydrocarbons, renewed sanctions have resulted in a drop in oil exports, affecting its economy.

 

At the same time, discover the rich culture and heritage of the Persians, who form half of the Iranian population today. With a history dating back to 10th century BC, see how Persian arts and science endured through time as you explore Tehran, the capital city of Iran, and the Safavid dynasty architecture in Isfahan, an ancient city with roots dating back as far as 2700 BC.

 

Take part in educational visits to universities and ministries to learn about Iran’s model of economic development, its national challenges and the impact of sanctions on its economy.

 

Across the gulf, the fall in oil prices in recent years has pushed Oman to hasten the diversification of its economy from an energy-based dependent industry to financial and service-based sectors such as banking and manufacturing. How will Oman achieve its goal to reduce its dependence on hydrocarbons?

 

Through educational visits to ministries, companies in Muscat and to the Special Economic Zone in Duqm, you will be given the opportunities to learn how Oman aims to reduce its dependence on oil by promoting investments in key economic sectors such as tourism which Oman hopes to receive at least 2.7m visitors by 2020.

 

Embrace the culture and heritage of the Bedouins and their semi-nomadic lifestyle of the past. Discover the effect of modernity on nomadic, tribal traditions and cultural practices, even as you immerse yourself through bustling alleys at the Mutrah Souq in Muscat. Appreciate Oman’s natural beauty from age-old fossils embedded in limestone and sandstone at the rock garden at Duqm.

 

While you are in the scenic and inspiring city, meet and network with fellow Singaporeans working and living in Oman and be inspired by what it takes to thrive and succeed in a foreign land.

Venue: Wuhan (Hubei), Quanzhou and Xiamen (Fujian)

What is STEER China about?

The programme comprises lectures* and seminars* focusing on the Maritime Silk Road, with discussions in areas such as cultural traditions, the economy, political, legal systems and regional developments in contemporary China which will be conducted jointly by faculty members from Wuhan University (WHU), Xiamen University (XMU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The first leg of the programme will comprise of educational visits to business corporations as well as visits to historical sites, museums during their stay in Wuhan. The second and final leg of the programme will take participants on a four-day field trip to Quanzhou and Xiamen where participants will be given the opportunity to explore the historical sites and learn about the Muslim Community in Quanzhou.

Join us, as we embark on this unique journey and familiarise yourself with the heritage, culture, society and economy of China

*Lectures and seminars will be conducted in English.

 

When does the programme take place?

3 – 23 June 2018

Participants will spend the first part of the programme in Wuhan followed by a field trip to Quanzhou and Xiamen.

The module will be registered in the first semester of AY2018/19.

What is the mode of assessment?

What is STEER?

The NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) is a programme designed to familiarise students with the diverse socio‐cultural‐political‐economic environments of newly emerging markets through a mix of classroom‐based learning and experiential site visits. Inaugurated in December 2010, STEER has brought our students to Botswana, Brazil, Hungary, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Myanmar, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and Viet Nam.

What is STEER Uzbekistan about?

Discover Uzbekistan, Central Asia’s most populous country whose 32 million citizens comprise nearly half of the region’s total population. This country is blessed with an abundance of natural gas and significant reserves in metals and minerals.

 

In recent years, Uzbekistan has been working with the World Bank to achieve its vision of transforming itself into an industrialised, high middle-income society by 2030. Learn how the government is working to diversify its economy, support private entrepreneurial activities and improving its governance by taking part in our educational visits to government organisations, ministries and private companies.

 

Explore Tashkent, an ancient city with more than 2,200 years of written history, the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, as well as the most populated city in Central Asia. Admire spectacular Islamic architecture such as the Registan, and the Shakhi-Zinda Complex built in Samarkand, which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia and an Islamic centre for scholars since the 8th century.

 

Can Uzbekistan achieve its 2030 vision? Come and join us, as we embark on an exciting journey where we familiarize ourselves with the unique heritage, culture, society and economy of Uzbekistan.

13 – 26 May 2018

Participants will spend approximately a week in Tashkent before travelling to Samarkand.

NUS Collaboration with Common Purpose (UK): Global Leader Experience, “How do smart cities ensure they are inclusive?” (11-14 Dec 2017)

NUS has collaborated with Common Purpose (UK) for another Global Leadership programme for our students. Scheduled from 11-14 Dec 2017, this programme is opened to all NUS students at no fee.

 

Themed, “How do smart cities ensure they are inclusive?”, the programme presents rich opportunities for our students to explore the challenges that the world grapples with today. Common Purpose has packaged an interesting four-day programme with FwD Insurance. Besides the in-classroom discussions and activities, the participants will visit organisations to meet up and interact with the leaders. Please refer to the attached flyer. The complete programme will be disseminated closer to date.
