PhD Research Topic:

Development of Singapore Mandarin word recognition test materials

My PhD project involves coming up with a set of suitable word lists that can be used for speech audiometry testing on the Mandarin-speaking population in Singapore. These word lists are designed to include common and familiar words to Singapore Mandarin speakers, and are also intricately balanced in order to be a good representation of different sounds of the language, so as to be used in clinical testing of hearing impaired patients. This research topic is actually a continuation of my Masters thesis that I worked on while completing the MSc Audiology programme. I have always had an interest in linguistics, so it excites me that I am able to work on a topic that spans across audiology and linguistics while plugging a gap in the field of audiology in Singapore.

The PhD experience has been a constant challenge to push me out of my comfort zone. It is a long (and sometimes lonely) journey as I tread in uncharted waters, but support and understanding from the faculty has been amazing. When I have concluded my PhD project, I hope to teach in the MSc Audiology programme, as well as embark on research related to hearing and public health.
