CUGE Backyard Garden

Research Period:

Jan 2017 – June 2022

Project description:

In January 2017, the 110m2 back-lawn of the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE) on the edge of Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) was converted into a “naturalized garden” by ceasing regular mowing of the original native grass monoculture and allowing the natural processes of ecological succession to take place, whilst applying light maintenance along the way, mainly associated with upkeep of public acceptance and for shifting the trajectory of the evolving plant community. At the beginning (when mowing was stopped), 10 key plant species were transplanted from other existing spontaneous vegetation plots at the Kent Ridge Campus of the National University of Singapore to enhance the garden’s aesthetic appeal and to provide some framework species to enhance flora diversity. This helped to increase the visual interest of the plot through the different foliage/textures of the introduced plants and their flowers.
