Location: National University of Singapore, School of Design and Environment Building 1,2,3, Singapore

Year of completion: 2021

Team: Yun Hye HWANG + DP Green (Design); Prince landscape (Construction); NUS Office of Facilities Management (Management)

Project Description:

Inspired by the biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics of the island’s native forests, the landscape upgrading plan for the School of Design and Environment alludes to Singapore’s primeval habitats within the contemporary built environment. The proposal articulates a landform previously concealed by built structures; seeds a Tropical East Asian forest with a native planting scheme; revitalizes existing landscapes by working with ecological succession to generate biologically diverse communities over time, and retrofits existing infrastructure to support natural movements and maximize resource efficiency. Strategically introduced hardscape elements offer an integrated experience for users to connect more closely with nature and provide opportunities for research and outdoor learning. The plan contains five main landscapes – 1) Wild Hill: The main gateway mimicking a forest ridge with distinctive forest species along the main staircase 2) Wetland Patio: water and climate-sensitive landscape with spaces for social activities, 3) Forest Courtyard: creating structural and biological complexity on an existing manicured lawn, 4) Terrace Gallery: Terraced seating area consisting of recycling bricks connecting the courtyard and the exhibition hall, 5) Singing garden: a spontaneous landscape songbird attracting trees and plant species.
