You’ve Now Heard of Formula 1, But Have You Heard Of Formula E?

Greetings Everyone,

In the last blog, I explained a little bit about how Formula 1 as a sport was pushing to become more sustainable, not just in terms of the technical aspects of the cars, but also its bigger picture emissions such as its shipping and air freight carbon footprints, to help get rid of its “dirty” image

In the next part of this blog series, I’d like to explain a bit more about a very similar sport, Formula E. If Formula 1 was foreign to you to begin with, then Formula E must be something you might not have even heard of. However, this form of motorsport has huge significance for us Environmental Pollution students, and thus its worth discussing about.

The cars themselves look rather similar to Formula 1 cars, however, in terms of environmental aspects, they are very different.

In terms of technical aspects, while Formula 1 has made considerable progress by switching to hybrid engines that maximize fuel efficiency and there by reducing its emissions, Formula E have gone all the way, with zero emissions coming from its fully electric engines.

When it comes to events, while F1 has made plans to become carbon neutral in 10 years and make its events more sustainable, Formula E has been scrutinizing its every environmental impact at events and trying to curb them to reduce any form of waste where possible. Water footprint and ecosystems are measured at every event, and it even goes right down to serving lower-in-carbon food at events like chicken or vegetarian options.

Formula E’s entire model is based on championing environmentalism, and becoming a less polluting, more sustainable sport, which in terms of its event management, is exemplary for other sporting events. It was awarded the ISO 20121 certification, the highest award for sustainable events, and the first motorsport to do so.

Formula E as a sport has the potential to have huge influence on issues such as climate change, air pollution and sustainability. More to come in the next few blogs.

Till the next blog!

Nandha
