Physical Activity and Nutrition Determinants in Asia (PANDA)

PANDA is one of the School’s interdisciplinary research programmes which aims to understand and promote lifestyle behaviours in the urban Asian setting. Two specific research areas of PANDA have been explored within the follow-up on MEC (Phase II):
(1) Study of the physical, socio-cultural, political and economic environmental factors that influence food choice and physical activity. 3500 participants were surveyed on these factors.
(2) Evaluate how the interaction between individuals and their environment affect their diet and activity patterns in real-life using mobile technology and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. 700 participants underwent an objective assessment of their physical activity and also a mobile app enabled EMA.

Currently, a sub-cohort of MEC (Phase III) is being recruited to a new PANDA study known as Continuous Observations of Behavioural Risk Factors in Asia (COBRA) to examine the interactions between behavioural and environmental factors and how these relate to health. The study will involve 1500 participants using wearable activity and glucose sensors and participating in mobile application-based surveys.
