ABSTRACT
In this seminar I connect the persistence of the smallholder across the Asian region, with the livelihood experiences of smallholders in Thailand, drawing mainly on work undertaken in three provinces in Northeast Thailand between 2014 and 2017. In the process, I discuss a range of matters including: the precarity of late capitalism, the ‘problem’ of ageing farmers, evolving livelihood footprints, and the intersections between production, reproduction and redistribution. While the seminar will be empirically grounded in the case of Thailand, it will be suggested that this experience rhymes with conditions and processes in the wider Southeast Asian region.
