#BeThatStudent
How would you describe your semester so far? For the year 1s, how did your expectations of the student life in NUS compare to the actual experience of it? The past 5 weeks of school must have been quite a ride! Some of you guys might have joined several CCAs in school and the others might have chosen to stay on campus. ‘Lectures’, ‘Tutorials’, ‘Readings’ are probably the three most repeated words in your life now.
Well for the seniors, I hope that this academic year has been a little more manageable than the previous ones! Which phrase describes how you feel about school now?: ‘Everything gets better from here’ or ‘Everything just gets harder from now on’?
At this point in time, perhaps we can take a step back. Let’s shift our focus away from ourselves (the endless hours of project work, CCA practices, deadlines) and see how we can help the people around us! Here are some suggestions on what you can do this week to brighten up someone else’s life:
1. Offer encouragement
This can come in the form of a post-it, a message or a hug! Think of someone who may need your encouragement today and GO BE GENEROUS W KIND WORDS!
2. Show appreciation
Have you ever noticed the people cleaning our school compounds? Can you recall the face of the shuttle bus driver you saw earlier on? Did one of your friends helped you earlier on this week? I challenge you to buy a drink for someone you’re thankful for!
3. Smile
Well, perhaps a wider smile on your face is all you need to give this week to brighten someone’s life! Keep smiling buddy!
There is more to being a student than being buried under heaps of work, rushing from one place to another and wishing that you had more time! 🙂 I was lucky to have a friend who was willing to distribute bananas and tea to the uncles at Kent Ridge Bus terminal with me! We were pleasantly surprised that the uncles were so happy to receive such a small token of appreciation from us. They were also more than happy to have simple conversations with us.
So #BeThatStudent! Be different, be generous, be kind and loving! I’d be more than happy to know more about what you have done to brighten someone’s day, so please do share them with me! 🙂
