QRCC @ NUS COLLEGE

ABOUT THE QUANTITATIVE REASONING AND COMPUTATION CLINIC @ NUS COLLEGE!

The Quantitative Reasoning and Computation Clinic (QRCC) provides a place for students enrolled at NUS College (NUSC) to work on matters related to quantitative reasoning and computation (QRC).

Similar to the Writing Centre, QRCC aims to provide guidance to students in using statistics and data to cement their argument. QRCC wants to help students currently reading Quantitative Reasoning with Data (RwD, GEA1000N) and Computational Problem Solving (CPS, NPS2001), to provide guidance in understanding key concepts so as to buildup students’ foundational skills in QRC. If you are a NUSC student in need of help with QRC, QRCC invites you to drop in during its operating hours.

You will be engaged by fellow NUSC students, trained as QRC Assistants (QRCAs or Orcas!). Instead of only working problem solving, the drop-ins focus on higher-level concerns in quantitative reasoning: Is there an alternative way the student can try to understand the concept? How else can we operationalise a concept?

QRCAs engage students either individually or in a group setting. We believe that students can often learn from peer-to-peer discussions. In order to facilitate this, Orcas prefer to channel queries into group discussions and then guide patrons’ discussions with questions instead of providing answers. Orcas do not, and should not be expected to, give direct help on assignments. QRCC drop-ins complement, but do not replace, the relationships students have with their professors.

OUR OBJECTIVES

To foster a positive environment, beyond remedial help, for the discussion of QRC-related matters in the NUSC community.

v

To create an open space where students can come to work on QRC-related matters, alongside others who are also working on QRC-related matters.

p

To render reasonable levels of assistance to students regarding QRC-related matters, particularly for RwD and CPS.

To place an emphasis on QRC concepts and meta-level thinking, by promoting peer-to-peer discussions.
