July 9 2011 marked Commencement Day for our graduating psychology majors. To celebrate this milestone in our graduates’ lives, staff and students got together for tea at LT14. This is the fourth such tea since the 2008 inaugural event.
The graduation tea kicked off at 2:30pm. Following tradition, we showed a video clip containing advice and encouragement from different members of the department. The program also included speeches by one of our top graduates Ms. Janet Chang Wei Ee and NUS Psychology alumnus Mr. Foo Yong Yun (now at Ministry of Defence).
In her speech, Janet offered heartfelt thanks to members of the department. She was particularly grateful for two things: the opportunity for exposure to a variety of sub-disciplines during her time at NUS, and the guidance by her honours thesis supervisor A/P Leher Singh. Janet ended her speech by urging fellow graduates to find out what their passion is and follow their dreams.
In a speech filled with honest sometimes entertaining anecdotes, Yong Yun offered tips for students on what to expect as they begin the next chapter in their lives. He also expressed his gratitude to various professors from whom he had learnt skills that have served him well in his job — skills for how to think critically, to present information concisely, and to inspire people around him.
The graduates then had tea with staff members, a time marked by much catching up, photo-taking, and farewells.
To all our 2011 graduates, all the best in your future careers and endeavours!
Note: We thank Eileen Soh, Xiong Lingxi, and Wynne Yang for volunteering at the Graduation Tea.
