Hello all!

Today’s post would be a little different from our usual content. On my way to school, I came across the peculiar vending machine.

Instead of dispensing drinks, this vending machine collects back empty plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Known as a reverse vending machine (RVM) (Recyclensave, n.d.). These are machines that are able to identify, sort and collect empty plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans. Below is a photo of me doing my part in recycling plastic bottles as well.

Even though these RVMs are a good tool to encourage the habit of recycling, I personally think that the rewards are not enticing enough to spur a huge recycling movement. As seen below, you are rewarded around $0.50 for 10 plastic bottles recycled, which equates to 5 cents per bottle. The rewards offered are truly not enough to cultivate a recycling norm given how money-minded Singaporeans are.

Nevertheless, I implore you to think about the environment instead of personal gains before disposing of your plastic bottles indiscriminately.
