Following the utilitarian approach, what matters is the overall net happiness of the world in the present and future. We will be comparing happiness generated from using renewable and non-renewable energy. Our stand will be to encourage young adults to use renewable energy to maximise happiness.

We intend to appeal to meat lovers, questioning the difference between the factory-farmed animals we consume and the pets we keep. Furthermore, we want them to consider if such differences in treatment are justified. Why do we value some animals while subjecting others, even from the same species, to suffering?

How would we choose when met with ethical dilemmas? This poster introduces a simple ethical problem to the layman, to kill five or one. The choice we make actually reflects our moral intuition, which can be explained by either of the three moral principles – Utilitarianism, Deontology or Virtue Ethics.

Ultimately, we hope to demonstrate the complexity of attributing moral responsibility, concluding in there being potentially no full moral responsibility.

The aim of our project is to educate and intrigue fellow NUS students about philosophical arguments on the moral acceptability of eating factory-farmed meat. This is done by highlighting two interesting points of view: Norcross’ puppy argument and Lomasky’s objection regarding Norcross’ argument.

By creating an infographic, it is then possible to present the ideas of Deontology, Consequentialism and Virtue Ethics in a concise, fun and engaging way to the general audience of NUS. In addition, interesting questions for Food for Thought can also be included to induce students to think deeper into the issue.
