Chongqing, as a provincial-level municipality, is an important modernized manufacturing base, a commercial center and an international transportation hub of the upper Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) basin. Geographically, Chongqing is strategically positioned as a gateway to western China and surrounded by mountains on all sides. Economically, Chongqing is an important hub of the upper Yangtze River Economic Belt, and a strategic base for the country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Chongqing has an extensive history and a rich culture. Chongqing is renowned for its Bayu culture, which is still prominently displayed in various parts of the city today. The Bayu culture dates back more than 3000 years, and dances and songs are considered to be its indispensable elements. In 1189 AD, Chongqing received its current name with the crowning of Prince Zhao Dun who described his coronation as a “Double Celebration,” which is the literal translation of the city’s name Chongqing or 重庆. A July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit described it as one of China’s “13 emerging megalopolises”.

Chongqing is one of the top 50 cities in the world by scientific research outputs as tracked by the Nature Index, and home to several notable universities, including Chongqing University, Southwest University, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Southwest University of Political Science and Law.
