Dogs and wildlife are dying a slow and excruciating death due to a lack of humane alternatives available to Himalayan communities. The booming and uncontrolled dog population have caused desperate villagers to take extreme actions in order to protect their livestock – poisoning the dogs with rat poison. Not only do the poisoned dogs die a painful death, their discarded carcasses are consumed by wild scavengers and this creates another problem of secondary poisoning of wildlife. These scavengers such as vultures have been observed to be unable to fly after feeding on poisoned dog carcasses. Furthermore, the uncontrolled dog population raises the risk of rabies transmission from wildlife to dogs, and then to people.

So, what can be done to help the dogs, villagers, and the environment of Nepal’s high Himalaya?

The answer is simply sterilisation and vaccination. This is a sustainable and ecologically-sensitive plan of action that will help control the population of dogs in Himalaya and prevent the spread of Rabies.

Together with her team, Debby Ng is trying to make a difference for dogs, people, and the environment, by bringing modern and humane solutions to people and animals in the Himalaya. With just S$10, you can support her efforts and provide for, not just red collars for small, sterilized dogs (along with marked ears), but also five rabies vaccinations! Do consider chipping in to help Debby with her fundraising efforts at Pozible!
