Saving The Sharks

NUS PEACE together with Project FIN successfully screened Sharkwater (twice) and held an impressive roadshow the past week. We held it on 18th and 19th of January at the NUS Central Library with the intention to spread the message of saying NO to shark’s fin. And spread we did!

Our Booth!

It was a major success, one to match all the efforts put up by both the NUS PEACE team and Project FIN. At our booth at the roadshow on both days, our members talked to passersby on the ills of the sharkfin trade. We passed out flyers, and also held a simple pledge for people to take that saw them swore off shark’s fin. We also talked, to those interested, more about NUS PEACE, the work we do, and animal welfare issues as a whole.

Encouraging support shown in our Pledge Against Shark's Fin!

We had an encouragingly good number of people sign up for our movie screenings of Sharkwater the next day. Not only were we joined by NUS students, we had professors and many others from the public amongst us. It was heartwarming to see that many actually cared about the plight of sharks. Our president, Saylin, started off the screening with a short yet poignant presentation on the Shark fin trade locally and globally. The movie then served to illustrate and reinforce the brutal reality. Jennifer from Project FIN had also taken time off her busy schedule to join us and talk more to those in attendance. She was very knowledgeable and took to answering all questions raised.

All in all, it was a successful and eventful roadshow for us. And we strongly believe that this year, we can make a huge difference. Here’s wishing everyone Xin Nian Kuai Le! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Hope everyone had a wonderful Chinese New Year and here’s to wishing we have a wonderful, prosperous and also see our wishes for our animal counterparts fulfilled!
