Synopsis
Champa, one of the oldest civilizations in Southeast Asia, remains an enigma to researchers today. This mysterious civilization declined from the 15th to 19th centuries and today the Cham exist as minorities in various countries throughout Southeast Asia and the world. Despite various challenges, Cham culture still exist. In this talk, I will explain how the Cham have preserved their culture from the historical perspective through 3 primary strategies; preserving the knowledge of the Cham script, preserving the centrality of the religious elite in Cham culture and adjusting to life in Vietnamese society.
About the speaker
Dr Effendy is a lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. Trained as a historian, he has wide interests that include Precolonial Southeast Asian history, Colonial Southeast Asian history, Post-colonial and Modern Southeast Asian history and Martial Arts studies.
