Welcome to the Design Lab @ NUS!

Design Lab supervisor is Assoc. Prof Francis Tay.

Modules that are supported by this design lab are ME3162, ME3261, ME4263, ME4101B and Final Year Project (FYP) for full time undergraduates as well as part time students from B.Tech.

One of the key roles for this lab is to support the Industry-Sponsored Design project, where teams of ME final year undergraduates work in a team (3 to 4) to tackle specific problem statement from sponsoring companies. Past project titles can be seen in here.

Each team, is supervised by a ME academic staff and each team will start with paper design (in semester 1) and then build a prototype (in semester 2) to demonstrate its proof-of-concept, with a total duration of 2 semesters (26 weeks), excluding university holidays.

NUS new semester starts in every January (Semester 2) and August (Semester 1).

Most of the new projects start in August and end in April next year but it also possible to start in January (subject to availability of undergraduates) and ends in Nov.

3 of the key benefits for sponsoring companies are:

  1. Spot potential engineers to hire in advanced: As the undergraduates are in their final year, they will graduate in May 2023.  I do have companies that hire such students as they were able to see their capabilities during the project duration
  2. Solve non-urgent technical issues: These teams can be your extra “part time” manpower to look into some of the non-urgent issues that you want to solve, but lack the time / resources to look into
  3. Creative / Out-of-the Box Solutions: As the teams are inexperienced, they may have crazy ideas that could solve your proposed project. I have some great examples. Some companies have implemented the solutions with / without modification

This industry-Sponsored design project was started in 2005 and below is the partial list of sponsoring companies that have sponsored. Testimonies from past sponsoring companies can be found here
