The why, when and how of LumiNUS

About the LumiNUS newsletter

LumiNUS Modules
This newsletter is about LumiNUS, the university’s new learning management system. It will replace IVLE in AY 19/20.

You can expect a newsletter weekly, at most. Besides the newsletter, you can also access information about LumiNUS at the LumiNUS wiki and webinars. CIT is also organising roadshows at the faculties and schools. Your faculty/school will contact you once they have been organised.

The LumiNUS newsletter is for academic staff. It is also for NUS staff who assist with teaching and learning matters. You may unsubscribe from this mailing list if you do not want to receive important news about LumiNUS.

Why did we develop LumiNUS?

There are several reasons why we have decided to build a new learning management system from the ground up. The main reasons are to:

  1. accommodate feedback we have gathered from users over the years regarding IVLE,
  2. facilitate new pedagogical approaches,
  3. enable new and future functionality, and
  4. build a more secure and resilient platform.

CIT could arguably have worked these into IVLE. However, IVLE has grown past what its foundations were designed for. This necessitated a new system which will be able to grow with the university as it expands its educational scope.

The schedule

IVLE and LumiNUS are running concurrently at the moment.

In the coming weeks, we will conduct information sessions at the faculties and schools. Your faculty/school will inform you about these sessions.

During the vacation, we will offer online and face-to-face consultation.

In early August, before the start of AY 19/20, IVLE will go into staff-only mode. From then on, you should use LumiNUS for your modules.

IVLE will still operate in case staff need access to past materials. Students will not be able to access IVLE after Special Term this year.

CIT will keep IVLE running for a year at minimum. We will decide by the end of AY 19/20 on an indicative shutdown date.

Prepare early for the switch

The LumiNUS team anticipates a big rush in late July and early August to move to LumiNUS.

Beat the rush and start preparing now.

We encourage you to start evaluating your teaching materials. Bring over only what is necessary from IVLE. By starting early, you give yourself time to learn the new interface and options available in LumiNUS.

If you are ready to start, read about LumiNUS basics and how to create a module.

Some staff have remarked that they have amassed years worth of readings and videos in IVLE.

Look for the materials that are relevant, useful and improve student learning. Bring these over into your module in LumiNUS.

For everything else, we encourage you to download and store archival materials on appropriate storage media. Use backup hard disks together with online file sync, storage and backup services, if the materials are not sensitive.

There is no rush to archive unused materials as IVLE will still be accessible to staff at least throughout AY 19/20.

If you want to move your module from IVLE to LumiNUS with the least amount of effort, you may use the IVLE to LumiNUS migration tool.

Do note that this is a limited migration. Please read the caveats – there are many – as IVLE and LumiNUS are not built the same way. You will have to continue setting up the module once the migration process is complete.

Whether you migrate manually or use the migration tool, we urge you to start moving your modules for next semester now.
