Garden Beats Festival

Hi everyone!

In my last post I talked about the many ways in which concerts and music festivals around the world are trying to be more environmentally friendly and reduce their negative impact on the environment through their various types of pollution. In this post I will be talking about one way in which the music industry in Singapore is trying to promote sustainability and a love for our environment.

Garden Beats Singapore is a music festival that has been going on since 2014 and has been certified as Singapore’s first ever 100% Carbon Neutral festival since 2018. This year, 2020, was the 7th edition of the festival and it featured even more eco-friendly initiatives than previous years to try and raise awareness on the environmental pollution issue and promote sustainability.

Single Use Plastic Ban

Garden Beats festivals of previous years used an estimated 22,000 plastic cups. Therefore, in order to minimize the plastic pollution generated by the festival this year, the organizers decided to enforce a single use plastic ban. This means that all F&B outlets were only allowed to use reusable and biodegradable forms of takeaway containers. The festival goers were also encouraged to bring their own reusable cups, containers and utensils and if they did not, they could rent a Garden Beats tin cup when they arrived that was provided by the festival organizers which allowed them to receive a discount when purchasing drinks.

Recycling Bins and Compost Stations

The festival also features recycling and food compost stations in order to encourage the festival goes to recycle as well as allow them to process the litter and food waste more effectively after festival so that the waste won’t get improperly disposed and contribute to pollution.

100% Carbon Neutral

Garden Beats partnered with Environmental Solutions Asia (ESA) who helped to calculate all their carbon and environmental related footprint from the event as well as provide ideas on how to offset this footprint.

One way the Garden Beats festival managed to offset their carbon footprint was through partnering with One Tree Planted. In doing so, they offered all festival goes a chance to donate $1 to One Tree Planted to plant a tree and thus contribute to reforestation efforts of the world.
