Introduction

Perhaps one of, if not the most important thing in our lives, water plays a central role in our vast ecosystem. From the largest blue whale to the tiniest little ants to the multitude of plant species, living organisms on earth all need water to survive. After all, as Leonardo da Vinci posits, “Water is the driving force of all nature”. This surely means that we should be mindful of our actions, minimizing harmful impacts on water bodies, doesn’t it? Strangely enough, not all of us seemed to have taken the cue. Various human activities, often driven by economic gains, results in the contamination of water bodies.  While it is not a new phenomenon, the pollution of water is an increasingly pressing concern on a global scale (UN-Water, 2017). Not only does water pollution negatively impact economic growth, but it also has adverse impacts on human health, aquatic life, and even the ecosystem. As such, water pollution is not to be treated lightly.

Ergo, over the next 13 weeks, “In Hot Water” will explore marine pollution, river pollution, and drinking water pollution. Through an analysis of the causes and impacts of water pollution, as well as certain strategies that have been put in place to tackle water pollution, I hope that this blog will help both you and I gain more insights on this pressing issue. At the end of the day, let’s hope we’re not in hot water, both metaphorically and literally, as we work together to help raise awareness of water pollution.
