Nurturing Graduates Who Will Contribute Back to Society
While our Generation Z students value individuality, they appear to be deeply committed to making a positive impact on society. Considering that they are already committed to contributing back to the community, the question for us as educators is whether there is anything more that we can do to further develop and nurture their zeal and commitment to be better citizens of society. The natural answer to the question is a resounding yes. The next question we have to address is what can we do, whether it be at the curriculum level or at the classroom level.

Adeline Seow is currently an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. She was the first director of the Masters of Public Health programme, and now continues to teach epidemiology to graduate students, and disease prevention and evidence-based medicine to medical undergraduates in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSOM). Between 2020 and 2022, she helmed the YLLSOM Centre for Biomedical Ethics as Acting Director. Between 2011 and 2019, Adeline was Master of the College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT), an undergraduate residential college in NUS. She led the founding team which worked to establish the college as a learning community with a strong focus on active citizenship and community engagement. She currently serves as Deputy Dean of Students at the NUS Office of Student Affairs (OSA). |

Peter Ho is a Professor at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also Vice Provost (Undergraduate Studies and Technology-enhanced Learning) at NUS. Peter was previously Deputy Dean of the School of Continuing and Lifelong Education, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science. In 2021, he oversaw the setting up of the NUS Communities & Engagement pillar of the undergraduate Common Curriculum. |

Intan is currently an Associate Professor in the Business, Communication and Design Cluster at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). She is also Director of the Community Leadership and Social Innovation Centre at SIT. Intan’s research and project interests are in the areas of social innovation and service learning, community engagement and development, community and school leadership, digital inclusion and information literacy, as well as public policies related to education, training, and social development |

Ms. Zoe Peters oversees the holistic development of students at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). At NTU, she provides leadership, strategic direction, and expertise to enhance Student Life programmes, frameworks, and policies, in alignment with the University’s vision. Within the Student Affairs Office, she is responsible for leadership development, student organisations (sports, arts, special interests), residential hall life, transition and integration, accessible education, student welfare and community engagement. Zoe is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for students, spearheading efforts to foster meaningful community involvement and social cohesion to ensure a holistic and enriching student experience.

She was previously founding Head of the Office of Service-Learning. A Ngee Ann Kongsi Community Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, she works at the intersection of educational institutions and social purpose organisations to nurture enabling environments for reciprocal engagement with communities in approaching complex societal issues |
