EXTENDEDABSTRACT

In Semester 1 of the Academic Year 2024/25, I am the sole instructor of the module course ST2132 “Mathematical Statistics”, which enrols about 260 students. I intend to use the face-to-face lectures to “build a community”, aiming to improve the learning environment for the technically demanding course and to engender a sense of belonging among students, not just to the course, but also to the university. The Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning (2021) describes strategies: social icebreakers, metacognitive activities, and content-based activities, and provides references, which I will tap on to design activities tailored to my course. I will report on the actual steps taken and their impact.
