Does this scene look familiar to you?
How about this one?
Well, funnily enough, they actually are pictures of the same place, Singapore’s very own East Coast Park. Usually lauded as a place of serenity and natural beauty, it has however turned into a washing-up site for litter in the ocean, a problem that has only been worsened by the Northeast Monsoon that happens from June to September.
Hello everyone, I’m Mark, a Y1 Environmental Studies student at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and welcome to my blog, The Adventures of Beach Cleaner.
As you might have guessed from the title, helping to clean up the beaches is something that I am heavily invested in whether it be through projects or volunteer efforts. As a firm believer in the quote from Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in this world”, this is my small way of trying to protect the earth and act on my convictions.
In this blog, we will be exploring the different types of litter found at the beach, where it comes from, what can be done to prevent the litter, and also some other interesting experiences I have had while doing so.
You might be wondering, why am I so passionate when it comes to protecting our beaches?
Having lived near the beach my entire life, it has become a sort of a place of refuge for me. To me, there is just something so calming about it, with the beautiful scenery combined with the sound of the waves crashing upon the shore.
That being said, I hope that you will find this blog insightful in learning more about the trash that we produce and that you will be inspired by it to take your steps in your personal sustainability journey today!
