We have explored the different food options that are available and it made me reflect on my own food choices. Currently, I consume animal-based foods very regularly, especially when I go out to eat with my family. With the increase in sustainable consumerism recently, I would choose a chicken burger over a beef burger whenever I am able to make my own food choices. Knowing that my consumption habits can impact the climate, I want to do more to reduce my carbon footprint.
I came across this interesting video on some changes which we can make in our food choices.
This article shares about the history and benefits of Meatless Mondays (Kihlander, 2019). “The small changes in our diet can create larger changes for our health and the health of our planet” (ibid.). I would like to take on a challenge to implement my own version of “Meatless Day”. I hope that by consciously switching my meat consumption once a week to more plant-based foods can reduce my appetite for meat and my carbon footprint. On that note, 25 November is International Meatless Day, during which people abstain from consuming all forms of meat, fish and fowl for an entire 24 hours (Hassaram, 2006). If you wish to reduce your meat consumption, you can do it fortnightly or monthly too, every little effort counts!
What steps are you going to take to become a more responsible consumer? Let’s all do our part to consume mindfully and sustainably for our health and the environment!
