Writer’s Take: Livestock

In researching on animal farms, I gained a greater understanding of the inputs into animal agriculture practices as well as the effects on the environment. In recent years, there has been more advocacy for veganism and vegetarian diets. However, some of us may be constrained by the lack of ability to switch diets completely. As for myself, I consume dairy products and meat very regularly as my meals are prepared by my family. However, with this knowledge that I now possess, I am better able to think twice about what I order while eating out. In the future when I visit my favourite fast food restaurant, I can choose to order a chicken burger instead of a double cheeseburger (containing 2 layers of beef patty).

Here are some interesting stories and videos that Ridzuan and I found online that could aid your understanding of animal farms. We also hope that these videos inspire you to make small changes in your eating habits.

Documentary: Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)

Summary: An environmental documentary which uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. This film shares about the harmful effects of animal agriculture, as the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged.

Blog post: These youths eat less meat to help reduce their carbon footprint (2020)

This blog post is written by Youth.SG, who spoke to youths to find out what inspires them to eat less meat. “You don’t have to go 100 per cent vegan to alleviate the impacts of factory farming”.

Do you think we should all remove meat from our diet? Would you change your eating habits? Why or why not? Also, do feel free to comment below if you have any interesting videos too!

Till next time, where we uncover another site of food production!

Trailing off,
Jade
