Duke-NUS Summer Program 2016

Dear students,

On behalf of the NUS International Relations Office we like to let you know about an exciting summer opportunity: the Duke-NUS Summer Program 2016 (running 10th May – 18th June 2016).

The program is made up of 1 module (GE3245), which comprises of 2 parts, focusing on Environmental Conservation and Urban Tropical Ecology.  Up to 10 Duke students will come on the program, and there are up to 10 places for NUS students too.  NUS students who are accepted onto this program and successfully complete the module will be awarded 6 MCs for the full program (subject to approval from home Faculty).

NUS Study Trip for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) Indonesia 2015

I am pleased to share with you the details of the forthcoming NUS Study Trip for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) programme to Makassar (aka Ujung Pandang), Indonesia in Dec 2015.

 

NUS STEER Indonesia (Sulawesi): Balancing National Development Plan with Ecological Priorities – 7 to 16 Dec 2015

 

Overview

 

Discover Makassar, the largest city on Sulawesi-an island which offers a diverse range of flora and fauna. Learn about the biodiversity of the 11th largest island in the world, and engage in its environmental, conservation and sustainability concerns in the context of Indonesia’s developmental plans for Sulawesi. Soak in the cultural sites such as Old Gowa, Fort Rotterdam, and the picturesque Bugis Phinisi boats at Paotere Harbour. Lectures at Hasanuddin University, a leading Indonesian university will be arranged to analyse the Masterplan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia’s Economic Development (MP3EI) and its impact on the environment (illegal logging and deforestation), as well as an introduction to the major industries in Sulawesi:- Agriculture, Fishery, Forestry, Mining and Tourism, coupled with visits to companies in these sectors.  Visit NGOs to learn strategies that create greater awareness of the environment, ecological mangrove rehabilitation and the world famous wildlife conservatory -Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park. Engage with officials in municipal bodies for an overview of the economic profile and growth prospects in South Sulawesi Province.

 

One senior administrative staff from the International Relations Office (IRO) will spearhead the planning, organisation and execution of the programme.  He will also be accompanying the student participants on this programme.  Plans are also underway for a faculty member from the Faculty of Science, NUS to join this programme.  A preparatory trip to Sulawesi in Oct 2015 will be undertaken by the IRO staff to pave the way for this programme in Dec.

-Educational visit to Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidup (PPLH Puntondo). This NGO manages the environmental educational centre, which is located south of Makassar.  The visit will feature a talk on the strategies that the NGO is using to create greater awareness of the environment, as well as its conservation efforts.

Programme fees:

 

$1,950 (approximately) before any grants. All STEER participants will receive a STEER grant of $500 each. Additionally, Singaporeans and PRs may apply for additional funding of $100 from International Enterprise Singapore (NUS will administer this process). Any unutilised funds will be returned to the student participant after the programme. The programme fee will cover airfare (we will be travelling on Silkair only), all accommodation, local transportation costs, all breakfasts and approximately 65 to 70% of lunches/dinners, all lecture programme fees).

 

 

Application process:

 

We welcome student applications immediately till Friday, 23 Oct 2015. Please complete and submit the attached application form to me at this email address by 23 Oct 2015 (next Fri, 1900hrs). The selection process may involve an interview session.  All successful applicants will be informed accordingly by 31 Oct 2015.
