IRO PALs: SEP Drop-in Clinics

Hi NUS students,

 

Have questions about the Student Exchange Programme (SEP)? Wondering about where to go? Unsure about how to go about mapping modules for the transfer of credits?

The SEP Clinic run by the Peer Advising Programme of the International Relations Office is intended to help answer these questions and more. The clinic will run from Week 7 to Week 10 (1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd March), every Tuesday and Wednesday from 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm.

Go Away Study Abroad Fair

NUS International Relations Office (IRO) is organising ‘Go Away’: a Study Abroad Fair, on the Thu 18th February, 6-8pm at the Yusof Ishak House Student Lounge (Level 4).

“Go Away: Study Abroad Fair” is an informative fair allowing NUS students who are keen to go on overseas programmes to find out more about available programmes, destinations, and partner universities.

Head on down with your friends to come view our different ‘country-booths’; listen to student-sharers; check in with NUS seniors; as well as meet students who are on exchange here at NUS and find out about their schools and home countries, their culture, cost of living, and more!

13th Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange Programme 2016

What is this programme about?

The prestigious Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange (SSUE) Programme is spearheaded by the respective Ministries of Education (MOE) of Singapore and China. It is the only G-G (Government-to-Government) Tertiary Exchange Programme between Singapore and China. It was the brainchild of Singapore’s then Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong, who proposed this programme to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) then Vice-President Mr Hu Jintao in April 2002 when the latter visited Singapore. The programme was formally established on 29 May 2002.

The SSUE programme aims to instil Singaporean students with a global perspective and understanding of China and its potential and to expose Chinese students to aspects of Singapore life, education and culture. The main objective and focus of this programme is to create opportunities for networking and interaction between the Chinese and Singaporean participants. On a higher level, the programme helps to strengthen bilateral ties between Singapore and China.  Many student participants become exemplary ambassadors of NUS and Singapore during the programme.

When does it take place?

The programme consists of two parts:

·         A 15-day China programme (hosted by the PRC MOE and the participating Chinese universities) from 22 May to 5 June 2016

·         A 15-day Singapore programme (hosted by the Singapore MOE and the participating Singapore universities; NUS will usually host the delegates for 2 days) from 17 to 31 July 2016

 

Where does it take place?

·         Singapore leg: On NUS campus and around Singapore

·         China leg: In Chengdu (Sichuan Province) & Guiyang (Guizhou Province)

What is the programme content?

·         Academic lectures

·         Visits to participating universities

·         Visits to government organisations and private companies

 


What are the arrangements for student accommodation?

·         For the China leg, students will stay in hotels arranged by the Ministry of Education (China)

·         The incoming Chinese delegates will stay in a hotel arranged by the Ministry of Education (Singapore)

What does it include?

·         Airfare

·         In-country travel

·         Accommodation

·         Excursions

·         Majority of meals

 

How much does it cost?

·         Programme fee for each student will usually be capped at S$600 (excluding a S$100 deposit, payable upon acceptance into the programme)

·         Additional changes to flights or duration of stay: Up to S$500 (estimated; however, this can vary significantly)

·         Personal Expenses: S$20 per day (estimated; however, this can vary significantly based on personal spending habits)

 

Are NUS study and travel grants available?

No, as this programme is heavily subsidised through the funds from the Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange Programme.
What are the eligibility requirements?

·         Singapore citizen or permanent residents (non-PRC-nationals);

·         Aged 25 and below;

·         Preferably Year 2 or Year 3 undergraduate at the time of application;

·         Minimum CAP score of 3.0;

·         Articulate, confident, open-minded and eager to learn and share knowledge;

·         Pleasant personality and a team player;

·         Demonstrates interest in China and its culture;

·         Must FULLY COMMIT to all aspects of the programme; and

·         Preferably hold a special talent(s) or skill(s), such as singing, playing musical instruments, drama, photography, IT and designing skills

Note: Non-Chinese and non-Mandarin speaking students are welcome to apply. However, do take note that most of the talks, seminars and dialogue sessions held during the China leg of the programme will be conducted in Mandarin.
Is a visa required?

Only students who are extending their stay beyond the programme..

CUHK International Summer School 2016

Greetings from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). We are pleased to inform that our International Summer School (ISS) 2016 will run from 4 June to 26 August. Every year, some 650 students from 35 regions join the ISS to enhance their current field of study and gain an insight into Hong Kong through the weekly field trips. You are cordially invited to join ISS 2016 to gain an academically challenging and culturally stimulating experience in Hong Kong – Asia’s world city.

CUHK International Summer School 2016

The ISS is open to CUHK students, exchange students and fee-paying students from different disciplines and regions. Highlight of ISS 2016 are as follows:

 http://www.osp.cuhk.edu.hk/iss/programme ·      June Session (4-24 June) offers courses in business and China Studies from culture to religion and from tradition to media and social development.
·      July Session (28 June-1 August) has a rich course offering in business, China Studies, Chinese language (Putonghua and Cantonese), engineering, environmental studies, humanities and social science. An optional Beijing tour (3-6 August) is also available to those wanting to explore the capital.
·      August Session (5-26 August) challenges students with intensive Putonghua and English training over a three-week period. Field trips to Macau, Shenzhen or different cultural sites in Hong Kong are organized for language practice.

Students will:

  • Discover Hong Kong – a place with unique colonial history, diverse culture and East-meets-West character
  • Explore CUHK – the greenest and largest campus in Hong Kong
  • Take courses taught by outstanding academics from CUHK and overseas universities from 14 countries
  • Learn and live alongside some 650 academic achievers from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures
  • Engage in open discussions in an internationalized learning environment

Joint Summer Programmes with Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University

In the CUHK-Peking University Joint Summer Programme* and the CUHK-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Summer Programme*, students will examine important issues facing China, including its economy, food safety, environment, government and politics, human resources, and law. After participating in the CUHK ISS June Session in Hong Kong, students may choose to take part in the Peking University summer programme for a two-week/four-week study, or the Shanghai Jiao Tong University summer programme for a five-week study. In both programmes, students can take a Chinese language course and explore contemporary China through cultural and social activities in Beijing and Shanghai.

*International students from CUHK’s exchange partners will receive a fee reduction of RMB1,400 (which includes a waiver of the application fee at RMB400 and a tuition reduction at RMB1,000) for their participation in the Peking University / Shanghai Jiao Tong University summer programme. Please register by 31 March 2016 to enjoy this preferential offer.

DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship Award

Dear NUS students,

The DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship Award by Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to promote student exchanges between NUS and European ASEM members. The Award, based on merit, funds up to three pairs of students exchanges (3 incoming and 3 outgoing) between NUS and its respective partner university in Europe in any academic field. Each student will be awarded 4,000 Euros, which will partially subsidise the cost of airfare, accommodation and living expenses for SEP. Please also note that due to the nature of this award, if any student from a pair of awardees chooses to withdraw or does not complete the exchange programme, both awardees from the pair will automatically be ineligible for the award and their DUO Awards will be retracted.

 

Applications for AY 2016/2017 are now open!

 

Criteria

NUS students with the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  • Are Singapore or ASEAN citizens
  • Have been nominated for SEP to an NUS partner university in a European ASEM member country (Refer here for the list of ASEM member countries which NUS has SEP partnership with)
  • Participating in SEP in Sem 1 and/or Sem 2 of AY2016/2017

 

Application Process

Only hardcopy applications are accepted and should be submitted to IRO no later than Tuesday, 15 March 2016. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered. Please refer to the website for instructions for submitting your applications.

 

Please note that this deadline applies to ALL students going on exchange in AY 2016/2017.  Hence, students going on exchange in semester 1 and/or semester 2 are to apply now.
