STEER Taiwan

STEER Taiwan

Exploring the Cultural Splendor of Taiwan!

What is STEER?

The NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) is a programme designed to familiarise students with the diverse socio‐cultural‐political‐economic environments of newly emerging markets through a mix of classroom‐based learning and experiential site visits. Inaugurated in December 2010, STEER has brought our students to Brazil, Costa Rica, China, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Brunei, Myanmar, Oman, Panama, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Viet Nam.

What is STEER Taiwan?

風土人情 (feng tu ren qing) – A Chinese idiom used to describe the local customs and practices of a region. Join us this December to explore the feng tu ren qing of Taiwan!

An industrial powerhouse, Taiwan was referred to as one of the “Four Asian Economic Tigers”. During the period from 1960s to the 1990s, this newly industrialising economy saw many social and cultural transformations – including the flourishing and export of its culture – pop music, TV drama series, bubble tea and street foods. All these developments took place against a backdrop of strong adherence to local customs and religious practices of the land, and an increasing interest in the culture of its indigenous tribes.

This STEER Taiwan programme will take you on a journey to explore – consumer, food, convenience store, youth, Chinese and tribal related – cultures. Immerse yourself in the history and folklore of this region through academic programmes and exciting out-of-classroom activities. Visit inspiring business organisations. Meet and interact with university students from universities in Taiwan.

Date: 10 – 23 December 2017 (14 days)
