USP would like to bring to your attention the following programmes:
- YSS-in-India Summer Programme (New) – 2 places, 1 June to 5 July 2013
- NUS-in-Yale 2013 Summer Programme – 8 places, 3 June to 5 July 2013
Background
This year, in addition to the NUS-in-Yale Summer Programme 2013, Yale has also availed 2 places to USP for a new summer programme taking place in Mumbai, India. The new programme, Yale Summer Session-In-India, will bring together students from Yale (US), Tec de Monterrey (Mexico), St Xavier College (India), and NUS for a module, “Bombay: City, Society & Culture,” taught by anthropologist and filmmaker Ashish Chadha.
The application for these programmes are now open.
1) YSS-in-India Summer Programme (New) – 2 places
Students will have the opportunity to study and be in class with local students from St. Xavier’s College. Critical engagement with contemporary Indian politics, society, culture and religion through an intensive and immersive study in Mumbai, one of the largest cities in the world. Topics include: urban poverty, urban town planning, housing problems, sanitation, cultural politics, religious and sectarian violence, caste politics, class ghettoization, communal violence, migration, urban–rural divide, Bollywood and popular culture.
The session will run from 1 June to 5 July 2013. This is a credit-bearing programme and carries 2 Yale credits.

2) NUS-in-Yale Summer Programme (8 places)
NUS-in-Yale Summer Programme is a five-week study stint at Yale University during its summer session A.
Up to 8 NUS students will be selected. They will study and interact with Yale students, stay at Yale residential colleges and experience many aspects of Yale undergraduate life.
The programme will run from 3 June to 5 July 2013. Students will select two modules within the broad focus areas of Economics, Politics and Philosophy, and Human Relations.

Note that NUS-in-Yale refers to Yale Summer Session A only.
ELIGIBILITY:
This programme is open to Year 1 and 2 students of USP and USP partner faculties (BIZ, FASS, FOE, FOS, SDE, SOC and LAW), with a minimum CAP of 3.5.
Priority will be given to Year 2 students.
- For selected USP students, substitution credit will be given for one first-/foundation tier USP module. The two modules taken at Yale may substitute for major/faculty requirements upon approval by the department or faculty; approval may be sought through the usual procedure for SEP module substitution. USP students are encouraged to further develop what they have learnt in these programmes through supervised independent study
- For selected non-USP students, approval from home faculty or department should be sought for module substitution/mapping.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT:
NUS provides a substantial student grant to cover the programme fees. Each student selected for this programme will have to:
- co-pay a sum of SGD2,500; plus
- purchase and arrange his/her own return air ticket to either India or USA, travel insurance and visa.
As these programmes are already heavily subsidized, there will be no further NASA funding.
USP will advise on travel dates.

You are required to submit the following when applying:
1) For YSS-in-India:
- a one-page CV, and
- an original essay of max 800 words. In this essay, first identify a problem facing India today — making sure to argue for how and why it qualifies as a problem — and then explain what you think is needed for a solution to arise.
2) For NUS-in-Yale:
- a one-page CV, and
- an original essay of max 800 words. In this essay, describe a research problem in the field of politics, philosophy, economics, or human relations (or an intersection of, or combination of any of those fields). Explain in some detail why you think this problem makes for a good research topic, and briefly tell us how you might go about solving this problem.
