Green Thoughts

Hello everyone! I am Kelly, a Y1 Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) major in the National University of Singapore (NUS).

More about me

I used to be from Outdoor Adventure Club (ODAC) back in Junior College, where the close contact we had with the outdoors had no doubt allowed me to appreciate nature more. One particular memorable experience was during our overseas VIA trip to Chiangmai, where we really lived with the basis for 15 days during our service learning — no technology, no fancy air-conditioners– just us, and nature. The back-to-basic way of living really made me appreciate nature more, and I gradually found myself wanting to contribute to the preservation of the environment, for the sake of all the like-minded out there! And 2 years down, I’m now in this course šŸ™‚

this is me!! :”)

I am glad to be able to share with you all my insights on this green scene thing, which I will be mainly focusing on that in Singapore and other themes that resonate more strongly with me, and hopefully manage to inspire you all in any one way or another! Do feel free to drop me a comment if you have any feedback! :’))

The rise of the Green Movement in recent years has shed light on the devastating impacts of our lifestyle on the environment. Our desire for convenience in this fast-paced society has undoubtedly come at the expense of Mother Earth.Ā  (I’m guilty of all the grabfood deliveries too šŸ™ ) Despite so, it is very heartwarming to see the green community growing bigger each day, bringing people together through a common cause.

I feel that this eco journey is one of continual progress, rather than perfection. It is impossible to expect everyone to go zero-waste, or for the whole world to be educated on the environmental crisis overnight. What is more important is each individualā€™s and organisations’ will to continually seek sustainable ways to lead their lives or to do their business. For instance, we can all start small by refusing single-use items in our daily lives, or also invest in green products such as tumblers and personal utensils (or even better, find one from your stash at home! that way we can reduce our consumption footprint too :”) )Ā I believe that consumers also determine the direction of corporations. Every purchase we make impacts the future that we will see– so, consume wisely! šŸ™‚

Systemic change is definitely required in order to impact the entire climate crisis, but as much as we can, I believe we can all act as eco-advocates, influencing the people around us!

Before I end off, I would like to leave you all with a quote I personally like a lot, by Margaret Mead, ā€œNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever hasā€. Way to go, folks!
