Meet our New Staff

Tim Groombridge

From an EFL / ESL background, Tim Groombridge received his Master’s in Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of Surrey, UK. His thesis topic concerned the use of paralinguistic features when giving an oral test of proficiency. He worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in UK and Costa Rica. He has spent considerable time in the Middle East, most recently working in EAP at a federal university in Abu Dhabi, UAE. His research interests have included the use of English in other subjects, particularly maths, and he has also explored summary writing skills in hybrid reading to write tasks.

Uma Jayaraman

Uma Jayaraman read English Literature at University of Delhi, India, for her undergraduate and graduate degrees and pursued her doctoral studies in Gender Performance and Diaspora writings as a full-time scholar at the National University of Singapore. She has been an educator in higher education since 1988 and has facilitated lessons on close reading of literary works and literary theory at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She has been a thesis examiner in her area of specialisation and been invited to speak to university students about her research.

In recent years, Uma has taught academic writing in arts and social sciences, creating presentations and workplace communication. She has also worked in teams for course assessment and writing course content.

Uma is also a published creative writer and theatre practitioner.

Jungyoung Kim

Jungyoung Kim holds a PhD in Communication with a specialisation in Critical Gender Studies from UC San Diego and earned her Master’s in Communication at Seoul National University. Drawing from communication and media studies, postcolonial feminism, and ethnography, her research explores the significance of everyday communication in a private, intimate context. She is also interested in media discourse analysis to examine how media interacts with or informs people’s daily lives in the digital era.

Netty Mattar

Netty Mattar holds a PhD in English Literature from NUS, and has postgraduate diplomas in teaching and school-based counselling. Her research focuses on the intersections among literature (speculative fiction and film), science, and technoculture, with a particular interest in issues related to trauma, embodiment and posthumanism. She is also interested in decolonization and is currently exploring how decolonial approaches in educational contexts may transform learning.

Jonathan Phan

Jonathan Phan is a Master of Arts graduate at the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and has a bachelor’s degree in English for Professionals from the same university. Previously, he taught the Intensive English Programme at his alma mater, and was formerly a graduate research assistant. He also taught English to primary and secondary students in Malaysian schools, with some experience as a rapporteur. Although his research interests include English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) and English writing skills for Malaysian indigenous students (Orang Asli), he is an avid fan of the history of English, and is keen to explore the field of cognitive linguistics.

During his free time, he builds and paints miniatures for a particular tabletop game. Besides playing rhythm games, he is also constantly trying to get back into the habit of reading for leisure.
